About

Born in East of Germany, I studied physics with doctorate at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. I was a researcher at the Max Plank Institute for Astronomy, at the Chemistry Department of the University of Basel, and at the Paul Scherrer Institute. I now live in Zurich with my partner and two cats.

Growing up in Gera, Thuringia, my life up to my mid-twenties was shaped by an early childhood in the GDR and a late one in reunified Germany, as well as studies in physics along with my passion for research. My research career brought me to Basel. Inspired by its atmosphere, I picked up the paintbrush again, after not having touched it for more than a decade. I realized that, in the laboratory, I was always focused on rational activities and I needed to find a compensation, so my mind could run free from rational constraints. Painting, as I understand it, requires attention to details, absolute precision, and lots of time and patience, skills that I have acquired in many years working in the research environment. It also depends upon the kind of creativity and intuition that I incorporate into the design of my scientific experiments.

What makes me paint is the need to combine rationality and precision with creativity and feelings. I like the style of late 19th and early 20th century artists, such as Henri Rousseau, Franz Marc, Otto Dix, Wassily Kandinsky, Max Ernst, or Marc Chagall. They have struck me for their ability to convey feelings and impressions. I also get inspired by traveling.
